Back in 1979, these gentlemen got together in George Harper's alias (Prez)basement to talk about starting a bicycle club.
Which is where it all started. It was decided that the club would be called "Major Taylor Cycling Club," as there was no other cycling club with that name at the time.
However, numerous cycling clubs around the world have used the name Major Taylor Cycling Club along with their city as part of their cycling club name since its inception.
There are also numerous cycling organizations who promote the cyclist "Marshall Walter Major Taylor" through the Major Taylor Association, which is unrelated to THE Major Taylor Cycling Club.
